Q
Hi Dr. Michelle. I've seen you
on Ricki Lake several times and I really like the advice you give. I
had something bad happen to me when I was younger. Do I need to see
a counselor? I would like to meet with you but I don't live in
your area. What can I do?

A Congratulations
on having the strength and maturity to reach out for help when you need
it. If you are having painful memories of your past and you feel
that you can't stop thinking about what happened or that your painful
thoughts affect your day to day life (especially by depression or
anxiety), then you should probably seek counseling. I meet with most
of my coaching clients by phone, so living near my office isn't something
that would prevent us from meeting. However, given that you
are probably experiencing strong emotions based on a painful event from
your past, you should probably seek the help of a licensed clinical
psychologist or social worker. I offer life coaching to help people
set and accomplish life and career goals. I help people figure out
what they want out of life, what they are good at doing, and find their
ideal job or mate. If you were just interested in doing any of those
things, you could work with a coach, but if you are dealing with trauma
from the past or mental health issues, you should seek the help of a
licensed counselor. You
can try several referral services to find someone who is certified or
licensed to work with people with the type of problem you are
having. Below are some suggestions:
