Q
It has been pretty challenging finding a job given the poor
economic conditions, I have tried all the help wanted ads and job search
engines without success. Is there anything I can do differently to give
me an edge?
--- B.C., New York, NY
A If you are currently searching for work, you have probably
already tried the most obvious job search methods like using the
Internet and newspapers to search for job postings, posting your resume
online, and simply asking around. Given
the difficulty you may be having solidifying opportunities, consider
trying the following less obvious strategies:
Interview
for jobs that don’t seem to be a “perfect” match.
Job descriptions are only written guidelines.
Once you are in the interview you will have a chance to more
accurately assess the position, determine your fit with the organization
and discover any hidden opportunities.
The interviewer can identify if you are a good/better fit for
another available position. Even if you decide you aren’t interested
in the position, you can make a valuable new networking contact.
Consider changing industries.
You may be most familiar and comfortable in one type of corporate
environment but your skills and role are likely to be transferable to
other industries. If you
are an accountant who previously worked in financial services, consider
repositioning yourself to provide accounting services in other
industries like healthcare, media or academia.
Hire a career coach/counselor.
Being on a budget may make you think you can’t afford one, but
depending on your competitiveness in this job market, a career
coach/counselor can provide you with the necessary support, development
and guidance to identify and land your desired job.
Register
with several types of placement facilities.
These could include private employment agencies, headhunters,
professional organizations and your university career center.
Use
all of your personal and professional contacts.
Ask your friends, family and former employers to refer you to
individuals in your industry who can help you identify job leads and
schedule informational interviews, which can often lead to current and
future job opportunities.
